2018 Palazzo Wines Cabernet Franc Reserve – An Excellent Treat!

Scott Palazzo has entered the International Cabernet Franc Competition for several years. Over the years he has won consistently Gold and Double Gold for his Cabernet Franc. The most current competition he did not enter due to previous smoke damage to the vineyards. We enjoyed last evening his 2018 and it was a treat to taste this exquisite wine.

Scott Palazzo’s background is both unique and fascinating how he ended up being a winemaker. Scott grew up in an Italian family which influenced both his understanding of wine as an everyday event as well as with food and celebrations. At age 19, Scott set out with his guitar on his back and ended up in Europe. There he ended up in Saint Émilion (on the Right Bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde River). This became his wine paramount experience shaping his palate for years to come and the foundation for Palazzo Wine some 20+ years later.  In 2003, after establishing a career as a television director/producer (nominated Grammy for Music Video & Television Director/Producer), he began searching for a similar terroir that he enjoyed while living in Saint Émilion.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Key to his success was his charismatic and energetic personality! Scott combined his experience with Old World wine in the cellar with New World fruit from lower Napa Valley rolling hills. Today his wines are featured by some of the world’s most famous wine restaurants. A small partial listing is French Laundry, Gary Danko, Michael Mina, Per, Daniel, Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park, Spago, Bouchon, Mastro’s Steakhouse, Emeril’s, Valintino’s, etc. The full list of restaurants can be found on his website, suffice to say, in any major city, find a prestigious restaurant and you will find Palazzo Wine!

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Today Scott’s portfolio of wines includes his Master Blend Series (Left Bank Cuvee, Chardonnay, Rosé) and Reserve Wine Series (Cuvee Blanc, Right Bank Blend, Cabernet Franc).

Scott started making his Cabernet Franc exclusively for The French Laundry in Yountville. This catapulted his wine instantly to “cult status”. This story is on his 2018 vintage of Cabernet Franc. On the eyes, this is a very deep red color with medium-heavy viscosity. What wafts into the nose is a symphony of aromas from floral notes of crushed violets to red fruits like cherries and raspberries.  Once entering the mouth all the individual parts burst into a taste profile like the 1812 Overture music with triumphant notes. Red and black cherries, subtle spices like pepper are counterbalanced with hints of dark chocolate and ripe plum. On the finish only a hint of pyrazines (herbal notes), this wine is vibrant, yet silky smooth beckoning one to take another sip. Structured and defined layers with silky smooth tannins and yet with defined edges are present. One of the smoothest finishes on a world class Cabernet Franc I have tasted.

This wine is 14.1% alcohol and 2018 was rated 94 points by Jeb Dunnuck and won the Sommeliers Choice Awards Gold Medal in 2022. It spent 14 months in 30% new French oak and 70% neutral French oak.

The current release is 2016 Cabernet Franc and is priced around $115 and rated 96 points by Wine Advocate. It received from the American Wine Society Wine Competition a Gold Medal and “Best Cabernet Franc” and from the International Cabernet Franc Wine Competition a Double Gold Medal.

2015 Barnett Vineyards Cabernet Franc – One of Pedigree and Silkiness

Posted on Updated on

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The Winery

At the top of Spring Mountain AVA, at 2600-foot elevation is Barnett Vineyards. The trek up the switchback road to the peak is worth the adventure. Upon reaching Barnett Vineyards, you are greeted with a breathtaking view looking back towards Howell Mtn. The Valley floor is the area between Calistoga and St Helena. Unfortunately, the day this picture was taken it was a bit overcast, but on their website you will find a few beautiful sunny photos. As you can see the terrain is very sloped (30 degrees and more)!

Photo ©Michael Kelly

A quick background on the owners, Fiona and Hall Barnett. They bought the 40-acre property in 1983 and established Cabernet as their initial varietal.  In 2007 they hired David Tate as Winemaker and General Manager.

Photo Barnett Vineyards website

For those who do not know David, he is a very “solid contributor” to the wine industry at large and has had a phenomenal impact on Barnett Vineyards. David has produced wine in Australia, France, New Zealand and now Napa Valley. His influence from vineyards to wine making has shown well with their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Hill receiving a 98+ points from Robert Parker. It is truly a 98–100-point wine with its dark concentrated mountain fruit and layering of structure and beautiful tannins. He believes it “will last 18-20 years”. This wine goes for $250/bottle and is extremely delicious! It is on the exclusive members release only.

The Cabernet Franc rivals some of the best in the Valley with its dark purple color with hints of floral and dark chocolate. In my opinion these two are the premier wines at Barnett Vineyards. Current release is the 2022 vintages and unfortunately are member exclusives!

They also produce Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay (2), Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (2).

After dinner last evening we went to sit on the patio deck enjoying the sunset. Pulled this 2015 Barnett Vineyards Cabernet Franc out of the cellar as a special treat as we have enjoyed it since its release. The 2015 Cabernet Franc has a deep purple coloration and has a medium-heavy viscosity. On the nose aromas of dark lush fruit along with floral notes waft into the imbiber’s senses. Once into the mouth, a beautiful roundness with velvety mouthfeel is immediately noticed. On the palate, tastes of dark fruits and berries are dominant. Secondary flavors of chocolate and spices follow. On the finish overwhelming concludes with velvety softness yet with mountain fruit acidity and tannins of comfort and roundness. The 6% of Merlot most likely was key in the mellower aspects of the gestalt of the wine. A long and embracing finish with this Cabernet Franc.

It will make my annual Best Wines Tasted for 2025! This wine is one of the top 15 Cabernet Franc’s coming out of Napa Valley. The current release is 2022 and goes for $110/bottle and is a club release only.

I usually pair food with wine, but as mentioned this was enjoyed as an after dinner drink. Could not think of a better way to watch the sunset.

Two Home Runs in One Evening – Both 2014’s, Crocker & Starr Cabernet Franc & Meyer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Posted on

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Background:

Had a very busy few days moving my wife’s mother to an assisted living facility. It is amazing how much a 97-year-old can accumulate (even with a prior house sale three years ago!). After one day of physical labor and a couple of days of arranging furniture, fixing little things, hanging pictures, getting medical records, shopping for supplies, etc., the work was 99% completed on Tuesday late afternoon. Came home and decided to celebrate a bit with two excellent wines after a few emotional and intense days.

Wine #1 – 2014 Crocker & Starr Cabernet Franc

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The 2014 Crocker & Starr Cabernet Franc possessed a bright purple hue on the eyes. On the nose, a fascinating combination of plum, vanilla and clove were the first impressions. On the mouth, a classic light “green vegetable/bell pepper” characteristics which gave way to dark & red fruits, tea and a hint of dark chocolate. The finish was long and mellow with residual sweet pipe tobacco. At the “beta event” for the International Cabernet Franc Competition the 2015 Crocker & Starr came in second. If we had tasted the 2014, I am sure it would have won!!  Pricing on the web shows it from $80 to $120/bottle. Enjoyed this wine with a quick and simple dinner.

(more on this wine can be found at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2019/10/21/2007-oshaughnessy-mount-veeder-cabernet-sauvignon-and-2014-crocker-starr-cabernet-franc/ )

Wine #2 – 2014 Meyer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Wine Spectator rated it 95 points and Parker in the 90’s. In 2017 it was listed as #7 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines. Meyer Vineyard fruit is on the hillside estate vineyard and aged 18 month in French oak barrels. On the eyes it is a very deep crimson color and heavy viscosity. On the nose dark fruits and chocolate waft into the senses. But similar only in the analogy of a circus clowns coming one after another from a tiny car, this wine continues to unfurl with flavors, layers and aromas. Dark cherry is prominent along with vanilla pipe tobacco with a finish of black licorice and long-lasting enjoyment. Pricing ranges from $80 to $100/bottle on the web.

(more on this story at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2021/02/12/meyer-vineyards-2014-cabernet-sauvignon-8-of-wine-spectators-top-100-2017/ )

No food was tasted with this wine, just simply to enjoy sipping for the evening which we both did!!

Can’t wait to finish them this evening!

Michael

2021 JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery Isosceles – One Great Wine!

Posted on Updated on

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The Wine – “Wine is bottled Poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The background for 30 years for the Isosceles philosophy has been to make it “their flagship wine and quality benchmark from Central Coast of California. A blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Cabernet Franc and Merlot” states Scott Shirley. Paso Robles grows each of these varietals to near perfection.

First looking into the glass with the wine, a bright and dark purple, almost black coloring and medium heavy viscosity. On the nose, mellow and soft cherry with a hint of soft vanilla pipe tobacco. On the palate this is one of the smoothest wines imaginable yet with strong characteristics. Black cherry with notes of oak, cedar and subtle leather fills the mouth. There was also a hint of licorice. The finish was layered and complex with each sip exposing the genuine uniqueness of this wine. Tannins were present and velvety but kept in check. Wine Enthusiast rated it 93 points, but it is surely higher today in my opinion.  This will make my Best Wines tasted in 2025, the annual list comes out in December. The alcohol level is 15.5%.

The current vintage 2022 sells for $85/bottle and is just slightly different from the 2021 mix which was comprised of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Merlot.

The Food and Wine Pairing – “Food without wine is a corpse; wine without food is a ghost. United and well matched, they are as body and soul: living partners” – Andre Simon

Paired this evening with a filet mignon BBQ’ed to medium rare. Accompanied by a fresh Cesar salad and mashed potatoes (not shown). The food and wine pairing was delicious with the wine tannins helping with the meat and embracing each morsel with fruit. Another excellent food and wine pairing this evening.

The Winery

Photo from JUSTING Vineyards & Winery website

The winery started first with a philosophy of taking the best of the Old-World meeting with the New World with an imaginative blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The goal of bringing about the Right Bank wonders of these two grapes and making an outlandish wine was the cornerstone of their existence. Herbs, red fruit with structure and elegance came together in their Justification blend.

Photo from JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery website

Justin Baldwin, owner and founder of Justin Vineyards and Winery summed up the goal very neatly with the statement “We believe the wine should be exceptional from every angle. I personally invite you to discover our award-winning tradition that starts with our limestone-rich soil in Paso Robles and ends when the last glass is poured”.

The winery was founded in 1961 when they (Justin & Deborah Baldwin) purchased their 160 acre estate in the Adelaide Hills. It is located 15 miles west of Paso Robles.

Photo from JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery website

Their talented wine maker is Scott Shirley who came to Justin in 2012. He is a graduate of UC Davis and worked at Opus One after college. His Justification blend in 2017 was named top wine in the world in 2017 and received 94 points from Wine Spectator for the 2014 vintage.

While having experienced their Isosceles and Justification wines, they produce many others. The reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, various red blends, Pinot Noir (Russian River), Malbec, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Merlot and Syrah. Their white wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay (both from the Central Coast & Sonoma County) and Viognier. Looking forward to tasting several of these other wines soon.

2023 Cuda Ridge Wines 2023 Merlot and 2023 Cabernet Franc – Doubling Down on Dinner, and Which Wine Would You Choose?

Posted on Updated on

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Background

Larry Dino, owner and winemaker at Cuda Ridge, was beyond excited at getting the news that his 2022 Merlot got mentioned as being one of the thirteen favorite Merlots from around the world. To be mentioned in an article featuring Merlot wines from Bordeaux, Tuscany, Napa Valley, Santa Maria Valley and Washington and some running up to $1,000 a bottle is some accomplishment and recognition. Story can be found at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2025/07/23/cuda-ridge-wines-2022-merlot-mentioned-in-wine-enthusiast-as-one-to-be-sought-after/

Photo from Cuda Ridge Wines

While visiting two weeks ago, Larry provided me a bottle of his 2023 Merlot to contrast with his award winning 2022. He also provided a 2023 Cabernet Franc to compare to his award winning 2022 at the 6th Annual International Cabernet Franc Competition winning Double Gold from both the Professional and People’s Choice Judges.

My wife and I were discussing meals the other night and decided on a special cut of filet mignon with a red wine reduction sauce. We wanted to use either the Cabernet Franc or the Merlot. Finally decided on trying the meal with both wines and below is the story. Which would you choose to go with this meal?

The Wine – “Wine is bottled Poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

**The 2023 Merlot**

Photo ©Michael Kelly

First on the eyes a deep purple and magenta color with a medium-heavy viscosity. This is no ordinary Merlot upon first glance!  Even this would have made Miles from the movie “Sideways” take pause and notice! Once the cork was popped, the strong aromas of plums and blackberries rushed into the senses hinting as what was to come! This mystery dark wine with beautiful aromas once in your mouth only begins to tell the story of this varietal by Cuda Ridge Wines. The dark plum flavor along with blackberries co-mingled happily like the song Happy by Pharrell Williams on the palate. On the palate, one is struck with the boldness, jammy (not sweet but texturally) and a modicum of grippy tannins on the wine. On the finish black pepper counterbalanced by a note of vanilla in the background, provide an enduring conclusion to each sip.

The wine comes from the eastern portion of Livermore with the majority (88%) being Thatcher Bay vineyards where the cooling afternoon winds provide an overall warm climate. Larry adds 8% Insel Carmenere, 2% White Cat Vineyard Malbec and 2% White Cat Vineyard Cabernet Franc to make this elegant wine. Barrel treatment was 50% new French oak and 30% once used French oak barrels with the balance neutral barrels. The wine was in barrels for 19 months. Now the newsflash – it is listed at $42/bottle and comes in at 14% alcohol with only 242 cases produced. It was just released on June 28th, 2025. With the nuances being different than his 2022 mix (why would anyone tweak a great wine), however with the Malbec and Carmenere, the wine provides layers and layers of mystery and intrigue even outpacing 2022!

This wine just made my annual Best Wines Tasted in 2025 for the quality and value in the category up to $51.

**2023 Cabernet Franc**

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Again having won Double Gold Medals at the 6th Annual International Cabernet Franc Competition for his 2022, I was more than curious to try his 2023. How could he improve it? Previous story on his 2022 can be found at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2024/06/10/2022-cuda-ridge-wines-cabernet-franc-a-gestalt-experience/

Here again, Larry took something excellent and made it extraordinary!

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The wine consists of 93% White Cat Vineyard Cabernet Franc, 5% Thatcher Bay Vineyard Merlot and 2% Estate Petit Verdot. The wine was aged 18 months in French Oak with 43% being new, 33% once used and 24% neutral. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol with 536 cases produce. The list price is $46/bottle and was just released June 28th, 2025.

This wine, for me, not only had all the key characteristics of a well-made Cabernet Franc, as a whole, it even was larger than the components of the varietal. Yes it had fruit, modicum of pyrazines (herbaceous bell pepper notes), tannins, complexity and an alluring finish and additionally hit the palate with a bullseye! First on the eyes, a dark and alluring maroon, purple coloring and medium heavy viscosity in the glass. On the nose, aromas of black cherries and violets waft into the senses. On the palate the symphony of flavors comes bursting forth like different parts of the orchestra. Raspberries and cherries are the dominant flavors with secondary flavors of vanilla pipe tobacco, earthiness all in a well-structured and layered enjoyment of savory and appealing flavors. On the finish the juicy fruit is counter-balanced with acidity and defined grippy and pronounced tannins on the roof of the mouth and back teeth. Truly a remarkable wine and surely destined for more awards! Upon first  smell and then a sip, it made my annual list for Best Wines Tasted in 2025.

The Food and Wine Pairing – “Food without wine is a corpse; wine without food is a ghost. United and well matched, they are as body and soul: living partners” – Andre Simon

Photo ©Michael Kelly

So we get to the question of the day: which wine to choose with dinner? Having the butcher prepare a special large center cut filet mignon and then adding a dry rub we were set to sear and BBQ the meat to medium rare.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

At the same time a red wine reduction sauce was having the final touches made to it consisting of shallots, unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, beef broth, red wine, Dijon mustard, chopped fresh Rosemary sprigs, minced fresh parsley, Kosher salt, black ground pepper and brown sugar. Accompanying the meal were sauteed Brussel Sprouts with bacon and halved roasted seasoned small red potatoes. The meal was fit for a King!

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Now which wine went best with the meal? Both wines provided a great wine pairing, the Cabernet Franc with its raspberry fruit counterbalancing the sauce and tannins, engaging the meat. The Merlot provides layers of dark cherry and dark plum fruit to contrast with the red wine sauce. Both were extremely enjoyable but tipping the scale by a notch was the Cabernet Franc being more captivating. I would like to hear your thoughts on which you would choose.

The Winery

There is a lot to be said about Cuda Ridge Wines in Livermore, California with Larry Dino as the winemaker and his wife Margie as chief wine taster. They produce Bordeaux style wines. The Cuda Ridge Wines tasting room is located at 2400 Arroyo Road in Livermore, California. Cuda Ridge Wines current production is approximately 2100 cases. They produce the following Bordeaux varietals: Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and most recently their addition of Carménère. Always experimenting, Larry Dino also has produced non-Bordeaux style wines which are designated under their Black label, these wines include Sangiovese, New-World style Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and others. Each varietal produced are small lots ranging from 100 – 450 cases. Cuda Ridge does extensive blending of varietals and strives for lower alcohol wines with intense complexity and character, traditional of the Bordeaux style wines.

A Tasting Experience and Conversation with Steven Mirassou at Steven Kent Winery

Posted on

Photo from Steven Kent Mirassou

A week ago, I had an opportunity to sit with Steven Mirassou to recount the years of friendship and examine Cabernet Franc for the future, especially for Livermore Valley. This was the day after the Livermore CabFranc Fest where we briefly spoke along with Beth Mirassou.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

The conversation was intriguing and revealing about some of the new directions of the winery. We started the conversations in his words “zealous quest” to produce the best Cabernet Sauvignon in California. While still committed to making one of the best in California, he has quietly conceded to Napa Valley. His Lineage offering is superb and has gained both national and international recognition, a premier Cabernet Sauvignon. While discussing his time, energy and effort in this quest, I think he has put this on the back burner rather than fully acquiesce to another region! Mirassou stated that while he loves Lineage and the other Cabernet Sauvignon based wines, he continues to make and feels compelled to showcase the variety that he loves the most and which has the greatest potential to deliver to the Livermore Valley the attention he believes it desereves.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Steven’s interest, rather I should say, his rabid obsession with Cabernet Franc, has always been present in the almost thirty years we have known each other. At Steven Kent Winery, he always made a standalone Cabernet Franc. In fact, while producing many of his Cabernet Sauvignon varietals, he often included a smidgen of Cabernet Franc to augment the flavor profile stating “not as “big” as CS but with more finesse and an aromatic palate of sandalwood and chocolate. Acidity is the watchword of this variety. Its acid-based red fruit flavors marry well with the darker more tannic Cabernet Sauvignon to enliven and lengthen Lineage’s finish”. Each varietal in a Bordeaux style blend brings its own unique quality and character. As Aristotle in his writings 2,372 years ago in his book on Metaphysics stated “in the case of all things which have several parts and in which the totality is not, as it were, a mere heap, but the whole is something besides the parts”. Then Euclid with his mathematics approach from his book Elements, Common Notion, stated “The whole is greater than the part(s)”.  You can read the entire story of Lineage Wines at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2022/12/29/2012-lineage-the-aristotelian-euclidian-connection/

After fully considering and realizing the full potential of Livermore Valley, Cabernet Franc is now at the forefront of this passion. It started a few years back with the introduction of L’Autre Côte offering. It started out as a single offering (etched bottle) and has quickly morphed with many others.

The first one being his etched bottle which made the wine community stand up and take notice. At the 2022 International Cabernet Franc Wine Competition with his first entry with L’Autre Côte, he came away from both sets of judges (Professional & People’s Choice) with the prestigious Best of Class award. This was the only wine entered from all five categories to receive this double acclaim.

More recently he presented a provocative idea of Cabernet Franc. He offered the same harvested grapes fermented in three different vessels and aptly named them accordingly: Steel, Wood and Rock. The Steel aging the juice in stainless steel, Wood aging it in French oak barrels and Rock in concrete receptacle. While talking we tasted the Steel which was surprisingly “zingy and acid driven”. We then tasted a blend of all three, called the Elements. This then spent a year in bottle. The Elements produced a rounded and a full mouthfeel experience. The 2023 Cabernet Franc Elements blend, which was released in November 2024, was one of the favorite wines tasted of the various vessels. A few cases are still are available in the Steven Kent Tasting Room or on-line. It provided a beautiful contrast with a Yin-Yang of smoked paprika/sage in one direction and in the other a bell peppers (light pyrazines)/tomato characteristics. Key was the tannin momentum throughout the tasting exercise from first sip to the finish.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

One other new consideration for Steven is that this lineup is slated for the wholesale/retail market. While in the past his Lineage line was about a higher end market aimed at connoisseurs and wine aficionados, his quest is to spread Cabernet far and wide within a moderate price range.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

We discussed various aspects of Cabernet Franc from his CabFranc-A-Palooza to my International Cabernet Franc Wine Competition and how the world is now ready for Cabernet Franc to be one of the dominant varietals in the market. Both of us have written extensively about why and how Cabernet Franc is deserving of this recognition as a grape that can grow in a variety of climates and produce varying results to augment and show the versatility in food pairings with Cabernet Franc.

Photo ©Michael Kelly

Steven had thieved some barrel samples into lab bottles. Here is where Steven introduced a new direction with his Cabernet Franc. Having been familiar with Steven’s Cab Franc offerings, this was the demarcation of this afternoon’s conversation. The first lab sample was from a new vineyard called Morgensen clone 214, one of the dominant clones planted in the Loire Valley. This wine while absolutely delicious showed a decided turn from Steven’s normal lighter French style of Cabernet Franc. This was the darkest of the three and when in the mouth, was “chewy and bold” and figuratively slapped you in the face to pay attention to its structure and layers of uniqueness. This was aged in a 500L puncheon for 1 year. He only made three barrels, and I was only halfway kidding, asked that he ship one of the barrels to my house—it was of another level of quality and hit my bullseye target profile for Cabernet Franc. This was picked from the vineyard on Oct 3rd. Steven felt this was of such a higher quality that a percentage will go into the premier L’Autre Côte Cabernet Franc production. This “new vineyard” will produce some of the best Cabernet Franc I have tasted and can hardly wait for it to be released.

The second lab tasted was aged in 225-liter barrique that produced a mellower characteristic Cab Franc but still had noticeable tannins and acidity in the mid-palate. This was picked from the vineyard on Oct 17th.

The third lab sample tasted was clone 332 and also picked Oct 17th.

The last wine tasted was the 2022 Ghielmetti clone 332 single vineyard series that will be released in September of 2025.

Towards the end of our conversations, we circled back on the various forms of Cabernet Franc being produced. I mentioned the wines entering the International Cabernet Franc Competition this year in Copperopolis for the “Specialty Division” from Sparkling Blanc to Appassimento versions.  Also discussed the Professional Judges Grand Sweepstakes winning wine from Yates Family and their 140-year-old Roman press (not in use, but in their winery/house) and a Cab Franc from Creekside Cellars from Colorado that won the People’s Choice Grand Sweepstakes, grown at 5,000 feet elevation. On my next visit to Livermore, I will bring a couple of these unique wines to taste with Steven.

**************

Photos ©Michael Kelly

For reference, Steven’s 2022 L’Autre Côte won Double Gold and Best of Class ($106 and up) from both the Professional Judges and People’s Choice Judges at the 2025 International Cabernet Franc Competition.

While the tasting of the various wines was so very enjoyable, perhaps the conversation, insights and intense laughter on many wide-ranging subjects was even of a higher quality.  The Cabernet Franc varietal is in solid hands for the future with Steven. Looking forward to our next visit.

2022 Selvagrossa “Poveriano” Cabernet Franc from Italy

Posted on

Background

Met the owner and distributor for Vinity Wine Company in Emeryville, California at CabFranc-a-Palooza in June, 2025. They were pouring a couple of Cabernet Franc wines from Italy. I have been intrigued by Cabernet Franc wines from Italy for the last few years since Daryl Corti won the Best of Show for his wine from Italy from both the Professional & People’s Choice Judges in 2023 at the International Cabernet Franc Competition.

The Wine – “Wine is bottled Poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Photo ©Michael Kelly

This wine comes from the Marche region in Central Italy (in red on the map below), located on the Adriatic coast. The vineyards are located 12 km east of the coast in the hills of Pesaro at an elevation of 325 feet. The wine spent 14 months in French barriques being 50% new and 50% neutral. Additionally the wine spent six months in bottle before being released. The alcohol level was 13.5%.

The wine on the eyes was cavernously deep red with medium-heavy viscosity. On the nose, lush red and black fruits rose to greet the imbiber. Present were a modicum of pyrazines (green bell pepper) and spices. On the palate, a rustic old world Cabernet Franc was immediately noticeable with dark cherry flavors, earthy minerality and complex structure. The finish was surprisingly smooth with silky soft tannins and very well balanced.

Went to the Wine Steward in Pleasanton, California and spoke with Jim Denham looking for a recommendation for dinner with either a Nero d’ Avola or Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo. He alternatively suggested this wine for a chicken cacciatore meal this evening at a good friend’s home in Livermore, California. Cacciatore is a rustic Italian dish that has braised chicken in a flavorful tomato sauce with vegetable and herbs. Accompanied by a fresh salad. This wine provided fruit flavors surrounding each morsel consumed this evening!  Very nice food and wine pairing.

The dessert was a homemade crust and strawberry pie that was spectacular.

And if this wasn’t decadent enough, freshly whipped cream crowned this delicious slice!

The only thing better than this gorgeous wine and delicious food was catching up with good friends with conversations both lighthearted and heart-felt. Thanks, Gomes, for a wonderful evening!

The original planting was named “Mae’s Vineyard” after their eldest daughter Margaux Mae. In this vineyard, Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Tannat, Malbec and Orange Muscat were planted.  In 2011 a second planting was named for the younger daughter Serafina Eevee and planted with Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Cabernet Franc, Grenache Noir and Malvasia Bianca. Both vineyards are certified sustainable and Certified Organic.

Do you know the name of the cage that is on sparkling wine? It is called a muselet.  It comes from the French word museler meaning to muzzle since the carbonation pressure is intense. The typical pressure of a bottle of sparkling is between 70-90 pounds per square inch, more than double most car tire pressure. The muselet helps secure the cork in the bottle and keeps it sealed.

The soft amber coloring of the champenoise method wine shines brightly in the bottle and the glass. It is both intriguing and alluring in its color. It is medium body viscosity. On the nose are aromatic floral and pomegranate. On the palate, the dominant flavor of green apples floods the mouth with each sip. Surprisingly, very little typical Cabernet Franc notes of pyrazines (green peppers) and distinct other Cabernet Franc flavors appeared. In fact, this wine was refreshing and very enjoyable without the typical Cabernet Franc notes. It did have a secondary flavoring of ripe raspberries. On the abbreviated finish, still provided enough “umph” to complete the tasting with the brut dryness and lively acidity.

Wine Enthusiast rated it 95 points. It was made with 100% Cabernet Franc grapes using extended tirage (10 months), making it 26 months before disgorging. 2019 sold for $39/bottle and came in at 11.9% alcohol.

This wine will make my annual list of the Best Wines tasted during the year 2025, which comes out in December. Approximately 2% of the 1600-1800 wines tasted make the list and it is split between under $50 and $51 and above price points.

A glass of sparkling wine with a green garnish next to a bottle labeled 'Cabernet Franc' from Quady North, accompanied by a plate of grilled pork chops and seasoned potato wedges, all set on a wooden table.

I decided to pair this sparkling wine with mesquite pork chops. They were seasoned with a dry rub of onion powder, garlic powder, brown sugar, smoked paprika and mesquite seasoning. The pork chop was plated with Cherry Pepper Sauce from Steward & Jasper Orchards. Accompanied by baked potato wedges with Russet potatoes cut into eights with olive oil, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, sea salt, black pepper, grated parmesan cheese and chopped fresh parsley. Choosing this wine was “unusual” but took the chance. It paid off in spades as it was refreshing and lively wine with its abundant fruit contrasting beautifully with the smokey and tangy pork chop and even the potatoes!

After dinner the temperature was still in the high 80’s and moved to the patio.  Used one of the new one-inch REUSACUBE’s to keep the sparkling wine cool (without diluting it) and it worked very well.

2020 Ancient Peaks Cabernet Franc and Mesquite Chicken Salad

The Winery

Photo from Ancient Peaks Website

Up until a couple of years back, I had not tasted Ancient Peaks Cabernet Franc, nor was I really aware of their winery. I was so impressed from my first sip, I scheduled to visit them in December 2023 and have enjoyed their wines ever since. The winery was founded by Karl Wittstrom, Rob Ross and Doug Filipponi. Mike Sinor has been the founding winemaker since the first vintage in 2006.

Once understanding that the property contains five unique soil types: rocky alluvium, ancient seabed, granite rock, shale and volcanic you can now understand their “unique label” featuring the soil types. On the property they make white wines of Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Red wines produced include Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Malbec and red blends. They even produce fermented mead, produced from honeybees. The estate is comprised of 14,000 acres and 900 acres are under vines.

The 2020 Ancient Peaks Cabernet Franc wine is dark and opulent on the eyes and with medium-heavy viscosity. On the nose, blueberry and blackberry wafted into the senses beckoning and drawing one to partake in the first sip. On the palate, the fruits burst into a parade of flavor profiles, coupled with plum and secondary flavors of coffee and vanilla. The finish was expressive with grippy tannins and an intense structure, not typical of Cabernet Franc from the region. A real surprise and welcome treat!

The wine consists of 92% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. Their limited-edition offering was hand selected from their finest vineyard rows and aged for 23 months in 50% new French oak. The price is $50/bottle and belongs in their Pearl Collection. The wine comes in at 14.9% alcohol and is extremely smooth.

This wine just made my annual list of Best Wines Tasted in the calendar year for 2025 as it had in 2024! This is truly an enjoyable and amazing wine.

Another light summertime meal when the temperature reaches close to 100 degrees. Paired this evening with mesquite chicken salad. Salad included shredded lettuce, chicken sauteed with mesquite spices, combination shredded cheese, minced purple onion, cut tomatoes and topped with multicolored tostada chips. Accompanied by chips and cheese. While not a typical food and wine pairing it was very good. The fruit from the wine, synchronized wonderfully with the tangy chicken. I always enjoy finding “new pairings” with wines as I remember the anonymous quote “Adventure may hurt you, but monotony will kill you”. Dessert was watermelon pieces (not shown).

2021 Ledson Winery & Vineyards Cabernet Franc – One of the Best Ever Tasted!

The wine comes from one of the smaller districts in Sonoma County AVA, Moon Mountain. Here is a map showing the area which has elevations from 200 feet to 2200 feet. From this vineyard you can see San Francisco some 50 miles away!

The 2021 Ledson Cabernet Franc, Moon Mountain District, won the 2025 International Cabernet Franc Wine Competition Best of Category ($86- $105) by the People’s Choice Judges and Double Gold medals.  They also won Double Gold Medals from the Professional Judges. A rare feat!

This wine on the eyes was a cavernous deep purple coloring  with medium heavy viscosity. The aromas were intensely vivid with blackberries. On the palate, this wine simply “broke out from the herd” with flavors so distinct and desirous of blackberry, raspberry with dark chocolate. The wine was so well balanced with fresh dark fruits and counterbalanced with just a tinge of pyrazines (bell pepper) and vanilla. The finish provided enormous soft and silky tannins. An enormously dense and complex wine. As a wine connoisseur of Cabernet Franc for over 40 years, this is one of the top 20 Cabernet Franc I have experienced! If you want to understand the enormity and essence of Cabernet Franc, this is one of the best to try.

It was aged 28 months in French oak barrels, with 50% being new. The wine sells for $98/bottle with the alcohol level being 14.9%. A truly special bottle of wine from Ledson Winery & Vineyards with just 231 cases produced. Obviously this wine just made my annual “Best Wines Tasted This Year” for 2025 (comes out each December).

Dinner with this wine was a tri-tip steak, marinated for ten hours in Chaka sauce and slices of pickled jalapeño peppers. Grilled with the peppers on the top surface. Sliced and served medium rare and garnished with parsley. Accompanied by a Yukon potato with fresh chives with cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella balls in Italian dressing, basil and salt/pepper. First time trying the pickled jalapeño peppers and next time will add the juice to the marinade. A wonderful food and wine pairing with the fruit of the wine surrounding each bite of the meat.

Cabernet Franc works so well with this meat as the wine with its medium body, velvety tannins and acidity standing up to the fattiness of the tri-tip steak. The fruit flavors of the wine along with its earthiness and peppery/herbal notes, synchronize with the savory and smoky flavors of the BBQ’ed meat.
