2023 Dave’s Porch Wine Sauvignon Blanc

Background
Dave Yewell from Napa Valley has been producing wines under his Porch Wine label for thirteen years. His stated goal was to produce “an everyday table wine” simply to be savored and enjoyed by friends and those of aware of his endeavor! He has closed his wine business at the end of 2024, but it was absolutely an exceptional wine and bargain for his 270 customers who followed him year to year!
It has been an endeavor of love and wanting to bring solid wines to a limited public (only California residents) for years. His Sauvignon Blanc started out at $10/bottle including tax and shipping and more recently went to $11/bottle including tax and shipping. Prices were based on case purchases.
Up until the end of December, they offer two wines Sauvignon Blanc from the Lake County region and a Rose of Pinot from Sonoma Valley at the same price point. His goal was truly to produce an everyday wine that was quality and affordable. Unheard of from most wineries! I personally have been buying it for the last five to six years!
The winemaker is the renowned Rudy Zuidema who made the 2023 a standout Sauvignon Blanc! He is also the winemaker for various other wineries including Rapp Ranch, Shadybrook Estate, Red Cap Wines, Southern Roots, Phamus, Napa de Oro and several others including his Zuidema Wine Company. All of which are excellent wines with a full range of varietals produced.
Dave and his wife Nancy are moving on to their next chapter of traveling and spending more time with their family. We wish him safe travels and appreciated his efforts and dedication to his business.

This was the first time to taste the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc. From the initial pour this caught my attention as being a shade darker than previous vintages, yet still a soft golden yellow. On the nose, it is aromatic with dried herbs and white peach. On the palate is where this wine showed its pedigree and phenomenal taste. Not a typical New Zealand (with strong citrus flavors & super crisp) but one of restrained character of brioche, silky and smooth, with a touch of apricot and a mild lemongrass. Secondary flavors of papaya and lime were also present. The finish is all mouth consuming with an intense full body and was long lasting, especially for Sauvignon Blanc. Immediately this will make my Best Tasted Wines for 2025 in the under $50 bracket. This list comes out annually around mid-December.

A bit unusual this evening as I ended up with two different fresh fish and decided to prepare both. The first was Orange Roughy. Orange Roughy is a sweet white fish that is moist, flaky and is very mild and not “fishy tasting.” Since it is mild it assimilates the spices and compliments them well. This was prepared in a skillet with papaya, pineapple, basil, parsley, lemon juice and Italian seasoning. The fruit and seasoning were perfectly aligned with the Sauvignon Blanc to make a mouth watering meal. Accompanied by brown long and short grain rice. And garnished with fresh lemon slices. This was my favorite pairing of the evening.

Photo ©Michael Kelly
The next fish was an Alaskan Halibut. Wanting to do something different than above, decided on a Mexican version of this fish. This included preparing and cooking it in minced purple onion, fresh salsa, lemon juice, green onion slices, cilantro flakes, thyme, and halved cherry tomatoes. Accompanied by brown long and short rice. A particularly good pairing not so much in complimentary flavors, but rather contrasting sweet fruit and citrus of the wine with the spice of the fish and sauce.

Now for those who wish they were aware of this extraordinary value both for price and quality and think you may have missed a fantastic opportunity, don’t despair! Dave is concluding conversations for an individual to take over the production. Stay tuned and I will be updating this story once the transaction is completed.

2023 Hindsight Wines Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County – Mysterious & Intriguing

Photo ©Michael Kelly
The Wine – “Wine is bottled poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Photo ©Michael Kelly
One of the first things I noticed is this wine is unique and mysterious in its taste. It is comprised of 91% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Semillon grapes. While generally not a “big fan” of Semillon, with this modicum of grapes, it provided a beautiful balance with mellow citrus, honey, nuts and vanilla influences. Combined with the Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc with a blend of European traits blended with zesty New Zealand characteristics to provide an intriguing and mouth filling Sauvignon without the “puckering quality”. An enjoyable wine offering the best of many facets of Sauvignon Blanc.
On the eyes a soft light straw coloring and medium viscosity. On the nose grapefruit counterbalanced by guava and mango fruits swirl to entice you to take the first sip. On the palate the depth of the experience takes on layers of enjoyment bouncing from mellow citrus flavors lime and lemon to tropical fruits of guava and passion fruit. Secondary flavors again awaken one of these blends with honeydew and vanilla. The finish provides complete fullness with a brioche touch, for a beautiful conclusion. The balance of pure Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Semillon was in my experience, flat out perfect!

Photo ©Michael Kelly
This wine made my annual Best Wines Tasted in 2025 (mid-Dec 2024 to mid-Dec 2025) both for the quality of taste and price point! The current price for 2021 & 2023 is $29.99 which is about sold out and then the 2023 is about to be released. Currently they have the 2023 on sale at $17.99/bottle per case (12) until January 3rd, 2025.

Pulled this wine specifically for this tuna steak this evening. In between rain was able to fire up the grill and sear this tuna at 550 degrees for a couple of minutes on each side. Added spices included minced garlic, minced scallion, chopped parsley, soy sauce, sliced green onions, sea salt and pepper. Accompanied by sugar snap peas and brown rice. An excellent food and wine pairing with contrasting flavors of the fish and wine providing a great yin/yang tasting experience.

2022 Wood Family Vineyards Woody’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateaubriand Steak

Photo ©Michael Kelly
Background
“Woody’s Cabernet” was originally named “Woody’s Red”. Originally named for Michael Wood’s father which was a fun blend of various red varieties of grapes. Wood Family Vineyards started to produce more Cabernet Sauvignon and needed another Cabernet wine tasting room and one for the retail space. Locally in and around the Livermore & Pleasanton areas this wine can be found at Total Wine, Safeway, Luckys and even Costco.
The Winery
Wood Family Vineyards, located in eastern Livermore Valley, with Rhonda Wood owner & winemaker, has been producing award winning wines for over two decades. You can read more on her background from airline pilot to award winning winemaker at:

The Wine “Wine is bottled poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Photo ©Michael Kelly
This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and comes from three different vineyards: 62% from their estate vineyard, 19% from Smith Ranch and 19% from Dale Vineyard using clone 4 grapes. Only 390 cases were produced and aged in 100% French oak barrels for 18 months.
While ringing in the new year with lots going on, here is a wine worth putting on your list for 2025. An intensive, big & bold wine like some other regions and yet is a smooth and enjoyable Cabernet Sauvignon. First on the eyes a very dark and royal purple coloring with a medium viscosity. On the nose, dark black cherry aromas waft into the senses. On the palate you find caressing black & red cherries and secondary flavor of raspberry. It is a medium dry red wine. On the finish, tannins catapult to the roof of the mouth, with acknowledgement of its pedigree without sharp edges yet grippy and an appropriate amount of oak. Relatively lower in alcohol at 13.8% but still packs a hearty wallop. The wine goes for $36/bottle and the 2022 will be released in January 2025. This will make my annual Best Wines Tasted in 2025 (starts 12/15/24 to 12/15/2025) as it is hard to find a Cabernet Sauvignon at this price point with such robustness.

The food pairing this evening was rather unique. Knowing the quality of this wine, a special meal was prepared. It consisted of a Chateaubriand steak cut into small pieces to use in a Tuscan slow cooked braised beef in wine. Substituting the called for Chuck roast with Chateaubriand (less fat) was absolutely the right call to enhance the dining experience. Ingredients included flour, salt, black pepper, olive oil, yellow onion chopped, chopped carrot, sliced fresh garlic cloves, chopped Italian parsley, dry red wine, beef broth and tomato sauce. The cut meat, having first been browned on the stove, was then placed in the slow cooker on low heat for 10 hours. Will add noodles next time and serve on top of them. Accompanied by roasted and sliced Yukon Gold potatoes and a fresh garden salad with northern Italian dressing.
A solid food and wine paring this evening with both the food and wine complimenting each other.

Stolpman Vineyards “Uni” and Shimogamo Restaurant – Two Great Finds
Background
While in Arizona last week and after a quick round of golf with my daughter, we ventured to Gilbert to Shimogamo, featuring fine Japanese cuisine for lunch. Here we met Mathew Noriega who provided some excellent insights on the restaurant, cuisine and wine suggestions. They have two locations, their original one in Chandler and less than a year ago, opened the one in Gilbert.
The Wine – “Wine is bottled poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson
I ordered various sashimi pieces and Mathew recommended a glass of Stolpman Uni, a blend of Roussanne and Chardonnay. He was spot on with the wine coming from Ballard Canyon in Los Olivos, California. Here the delicate richness and mouth filling Roussanne combined with crisp and bright Chardonnay with apple and pear tastes, provided a great accompaniment to the fresh sashimi.

Ordered four pieces each of tuna, yellowtail, salmon and a special “fatty tuna” selection. The presentation on ice was perfectly presented. Each piece of sashimi was delicious and extremely fresh. The wine complimented each morsel of fish consumed. An excellent recommendation by Mathew. Can’t wait to enjoy a dinner meal there upon my next visit.
The Winery
I have heard of Stolpman winery for years, but have never tasted their wines at restaurants, wine judging events or at friends’ houses. They are known for their Syrah and Roussanne grapes growing in limestone outcropping near on the Central Coast with the nearby Pacific Ocean breezes. They are committed to dry farming, native fermentation and with minimal manipulation bringing forth their wines. The wines come from Ballard Canyon AVA. I will be investigating and getting to know Stolpman Vineyards soon!

On the eyes a unique dark purple and red combination of coloring and medium heavy viscosity. This illuminating and full body wine immediately catches your attention. On the nose fragrant dark fruit rises to greet the senses. Once on the palate, blackberries dominate, and secondary flavor of crab apple and a modicum of rhubarb is also present. On the finish, a multi-layered textual feel and the tannins are present to provide an ample “teeth clinging” sensation with edgy tannins, but still smooth and enjoyable.

photo ©Michael Kelly
Only 95 cases produced, and it will be released December 11th with a price of $80/bottle. Her 2019 “Clone 30” Cabernet Sauvignon won Double Gold at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition. This 2021 has 14.8% alcohol.
It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate vineyards. It was aged 17 months in 50% new French oak barrels and the balance being once used French oak barrels. Then combined and aged another 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Splitting the barrel fermentation provides, in Rhonda’s words, “a velvety finish with structure”.

The wine was paired with a seared (1500 degrees) and BBQ’ed ribeye steak this evening and served medium rare. Accompanied by cheesy potato casserole. Also, a fresh spinach salad with slices of purple onions, bacon, green onion, dried cranberries and candied pecans with a Northern Italian dressing.
This wine was specifically chosen to cut through a fattier cut of steak, and it did an excellent job. One of the better wines chosen to go with this delicious meal.

While having enjoyed past vintages of Hindsight Wines Chardonnay, this is the first review of their Chardonnay from Monterey County. As you can see on the eyes a glistening golden color with brightness and medium viscosity. On the nose are the aromatic of green apple and peach. On the palate, a fresh and mild citrus of lemon, passion fruit coupled with a mellow butterscotch flavor. On the finish minerality and brioche flavors complete this beautiful experience. The wine is 14.3% alcohol.
The wine is listed at $31.99/bottle and is perhaps one of the best values in the market today! This wine made my annual Best Wines tasted in 2024 for quality, taste and value for under $51/bottle. It now will be one of top five everyday Chardonnay wines in the cellar along with others from Suisun Valley, Livermore Valley, Sonoma Valley and Amador County.

2020 Optio Grenache Revisited One Year Later – Still An Absolute Winner!
The Winery

Photo ©Michael Kelly
Opened this wine again this weekend. Originally met with winery owners Troy and Michelle LaMar one year ago on their 14-acre vineyard with nine acres currently under vine. The vineyard is located at the tail end of the Templeton district within the Geneseo District appellation. Their production is around 500 cases a year with the balance of the fruit being sold off. Their goal is to increase production steadily with club membership and getting the word out on their quality wines. They already have won many awards including for their 2022 Chardonnay, Las Vegas Global Platinum Medal with 96 points and their 2021 Estate Tempranillo, Las Vegas Global Platinum Medal also with 96 points! This is the little winery that not only could but has!!

Photo ©Michael Kelly
Troy is a general surgeon in Los Angeles and met his wife Michelle as she was a floor nurse at the same hospital. She is now in nursing education. Today with their son LT, they spend as much time as possible on the estate. Their winemaker is Aaron Jackson from Tin City with 23 years making gorgeous wines. Aaron’s background includes Four Vines, ONX and Saxum wineries. He earned his Wine & Viticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and spent a year in Australia where he earned a master’s degree in Oenology.

Photo ©Michael Kelly
The winery today produces Chardonnay, Inmesceo (meaning blend together of Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Petite Sirah), Grenache, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. Had the opportunity to taste each one (a few with different vintages) and uniquely different was that each one was a solid and exceptional wine. Not a so-so or average wine in their offering. Rare and very much appreciated by their customers.
The name Optio comes from the Latin word meaning “choice” which has paid off for the LaMar family. Troy while in medical school his first day heard a professor quote William Jennings Bryan “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.” Literally and physically, the little vineyard on top of the hill has climbed up it to achieve many excellent wines.

The Wine 2020 Optio Vineyards Grenache – “Wine is bottled poetry” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Photo ©Michael Kelly
This style of Grenache has old world structure with layers of rich flavors and juicy, rustic tannins. On the eyes, a very dark, blood red coloring with medium-full viscosity. On the nose aromas of plum, blueberries, new leather, and clove waft into the senses. On the palate you are awakened to a lively and enjoyable juicy cherry followed by a complex finish of fig, licorice, molasses, and black cherry with hints of spices and dried herbs. The finish shows the earthy minerality and earthiness of these grapes. They use 100% neutral oak barrels, and the wine is aged 17 months. Only 75 cases were produced. This is one of the best Grenache wines I have experienced! The current vintage is their 2022 and the price is $62/bottle. I can’t wait to try the 2022!
The wine made my annual list of Best Wines Tasted in 2023 and will again in 2024! I left the winery purchasing four bottles and wished I had purchased a few more!

2021 CULMINATION Proprietary Red Wine, A New Wine (Part II)

Photo ©Michael Kelly
Background
The word culmination is defined by the “end point or final stage of something you’ve been working toward or something that’s been building up”. Synonyms are apex, climax, peak, pinnacle, summit or zenith. Wood Family Vineyards, having made dozens upon dozens of award-winning wines, decided to launch a second label. The second label is the culmination of intense understanding of the vineyard management, grape harvesting, production techniques, barrel choices and wines their customers desired. Simply stated the culmination of decades of intense knowledge and experience was more than appropriate to call the new label CULMINATION!
So why this new label? Often a second label is the function of selecting grapes from a particular row in the vineyard, special barrels, pricing profiling or ageing considerations. From conversations with Harrison Wood VP and Rhonda Wood the winemaker, the second label is much more than augmenting their current production. The CULMINATION label is reserved for completely different selection and techniques producing some of the same varieties they produce at Wood Family Vineyards. Their intention is to introduce an elevated experience beyond their current offering and tasting room enjoyment. The CULMINATION wines will be targeted at wine connoisseurs and those wanting a more intimate experience with possible food pairings. Many new and exciting announcements will be forthcoming over the next few months including a CULMINATION EXPERIENCE.
The two CULMINATION wines being offered in December will be CULMINATION Cabernet Franc and CULMINATION Proprietary Red Blend. The Cabernet Franc wine review was published earlier and can be read at: https://californiawinesandwineries.com/2024/11/22/2022-culmination-cabernet-franc-a-new-wine/ .
This story is about their new label CULMINATION 2021 Proprietary Red Blend.

Only occasionally one comes across a “heavenly sent” wine, this is one of them! The Wood Family Vineyards has produced consistently very good Cabernet Sauvignon wines, but this is on a different stratosphere of quality. In tasting and reviewing this wine, this is the pinnacle of wine making with Livermore Valley grapes. This wine once reviewed, in my opinion, will rate between 97 and 100 points!
First on the eyes a deep almost purple/blackish coloring and with medium-heavy viscosity. On the nose juicy black and red fruits fill up the olfactory senses immediately with an ethereal aroma. Again, leaving this wine open for a good hour allowed the fruit profile on the palate to fully mature with raspberries and blueberries. The experience of intense fruit flavors of both red and blue fruits conjoined made this wine “melt” in the mouth with robust taste. Clove and French oak were also noted. On the extremely long finish, oak and soft new leather rounded out the tasting experience with exquisite tannins. The tannins entered the palate with texture and some jaggedness, then once fully appreciated, became soft and embracing. It reminded me of the adage, Spring coming in as roaring lion and leaves like a docile lamb! This wine is for serious and discerning imbibers of Cabernet Sauvignon.
For the 2021 Culmination Red Wine only 54 cases were produced. It is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. It will be released in December 2024 at $100/bottle and at 15% alcohol. The barrel treatment was for the first 17 months was in 100% new French oak barrels for the Clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc for the first 17 months was in 35% new French oak barrels. Then both varietals were blended aged in 100% new French oak for another 13 months! This wine will sell for $100/bottle.
One of the unique characteristics of this wine will be its ability to be aged 15 years in my opinion with strong fruit and firm tannins. This wine will make my annual Best Wines tasted in 2024 without hesitation.

Paired this evening with seared filet mignon steak. The filet was served medium rare and topped with crumbled blue cheese. Accompanied by a twice baked potato topped with cheddar cheese and sauteed snow peas and white mushroom slices.
The food and wine pairing were spot on with the filet mignon meeting the fruit forward characteristics of wine and tannins.
I look forward to tasting it again in December when it is released.
