2022 Smith-Madrone Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon – An Excellent Wine and a Great Value

Opened this bottle last evening to enjoy a special meal. What transpired was a wine that exceeded my already high expectations. 2022 Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon was fragrant, fruit forward and soft going on to the palate, yet once there, burst forth with intense dark fruit flavors and brute strength with perfectly enjoyable tannins – a joyous surprise.

On the eyes a deep penetrating purple and crimson coloring. In the glass, medium heavy viscosity. Then on the nose fresh red cherries burst in the olfactory senses with a violet scent. Once on the palate, luscious and impactful red and black berries filled the mouth with a bold and brawny yet caressing flavor with a secondary note of blueberries and light vanilla pipe tobacco.  At the finish, strong bold tannins showed the pedigree of this vineyard with their angularness and robustness. The minerality was also noted. This is why I believe this youthful wine will appreciate and improve with aging over the next 12-15 years. The complexity of this wine is astonishing with flavor and character.

The wine consists of 81.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18.5% of their award-winning Cabernet Franc. The wine is grown on their hillside estate being non-tilled and sustainably farmed. The wine was aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak. The wine came in at 14.2% alcohol with only 1518 cases being produced and priced at $70/bottle, a remarkable bargain for this quality.

This wine just made my annual list Best Wines Tasted for 2026. Only 2-3% of the 1800 wines tasted during the year make the list which comes out in December each year. My suggestion is to garner 4 or more bottles and have one now and every 2-3 years open another, if you can wait that long!

While I have my own internal rating system, judging the wine on its merits only and this being rated with my second highest score, the best being “perfect”, it is by far one of the best value wines in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines at any price point.

Paired this evening with a prime filet mignon from Nebraska that we discovered at a local meat market called Chuck’s Fine Meats.  The steak was seasoned with Applewood salt, mesquite, roasted garlic powder and Chuck’s Fine Meat Steak Seasoning. It was seared at 1500 degrees and served medium rare. Accompanied by a baked Russet potato and sauteed broccoli. A delicious meal and the wine was spot on with its fruit and  tannins.

Here is where the Smith-Madrone shined with its fruit forwardness making it a wonderful flavor to complement the BBQ steak with strength and boldness enough with tannins to “cut through” the meat, making it a delightful meal.

This wine made my annual Best Wines Tasted for 2026.

This wine is their second Cabernet Sauvignon vintage since the Glass Fire in 2020 during which they produced no Cabernet Sauvignon. A story truly reminiscent of The Phoenix!

In the picture you can see the Glass Fire burning right up against their property line.

The views from atop Spring Mountain are breathtaking overlooking Napa Valley.

The founder, managing partner and enologist is Stuart Smith (center), Charles Smith (left) is the winemaker, and the associate winemaker is François Bugué (right). Truly a family affair! All the wines are estate and dry-farmed on top of the mountain. Currently their production is approximately 6,000 cases a year. They produce Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and their iconic Cooks Flat (blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc).

We enjoyed a nice dining experience last night at a local restaurant but was not enthralled with their wine list or the wine chosen for dinner. Came home and watched a movie and open up this incredible wine. One of our all-time favorites.

The winery is located on Howell Mountain; however, they do source some fruit from their other estate located on Mount Veeder. So, they offer both Mt Veeder and Howell Mountain vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon.

First thing I noticed was how well the winery did in selecting the perfect cork that has lasted for over 17 years. Of course, it was stored at the correct temperature and humidity levels in the wine cellar.

2009 O’Shaughnessy 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is from the west side of the Napa Valley, Mount Veeder. On the eyes, a dark ruby coloring with medium heavy viscosity. On the nose, a woody but sweet briar, with blackberry and black cherry fruits wafting into the nose. On the palate, extremely concentrated fruits, licorice and black cherry exploded in the mouth with a background of sweet tobacco smoke and leather. Additionally, secondary flavors of dark chocolate were noticed.   The finish had some strong tannins, but without any “edginess” which provided for a long velvety crescendo. Rated at 97 points by RP. This wine could easily go another 3-4 years but why wait?

This wine will make my annual list of Best Wines Tasted for 2026. O’Shaughnessy Winery has made this list for 15+ years annually for their exquisite wines.

The current vintage is their 2022 and goes for $160/bottle.

This wine came up in “my to drink list” for 2025.  After tasting it last evening this could easily go another five years. Parker also mentioned it will age 25+ years! Rated 98 points by Robert Parker and has been aging in the cellar for 14 years! Searching on the internet average price today appears to be $149/bottle. Today’s current vintage at the winery is their 2021 and is allocated at $160/bottle.

First on the eyes striking combination of inky purple and dark crimson coloring. Viscosity was medium-heavy. Once the cork was popped it took a while for the flavors to “open up” and express their pedigree after so many years of hibernation. Once opened, fresh blackberries and smooth blueberries filled the olfactory senses. On the palate, the dark fruits combined to make a robust compote of pure fruit. Full bodied possessing strong enjoyable tannins without any pointiness. The finish concluded being opulent and richly rewarding.

This wine will make my annual Best Wines Tasted Listing for 2025 (list comes out December for each year).

With a break in the weather, the BBQ was fired up for filet mignon steaks this evening. Seasoned with applewood smoke salt and Flatiron BBQ Rub was pounded in the steak on both sides. This rub contains chipotle, ancho, habanero, thyme, toasted onion, smoke ghost peppers, roasted garlic and paprika!

Seared at 1500 degrees and served medium rare. Accompanied by a Russett potato and my favorite salad of iceberg lettuce, fresh bacon pieces, halved cherry tomatoes, green onions and crumbled Point Reyes Blue cheese.

Absolutely a delicious and memorable food and wine pairing this evening!

Located on Howell Mountain with acres of vineyards planted on the hillsides. The wine cave is perhaps one of the best in Napa with their infinity loop design. They also have acreage on Mount Veeder and have produced exceptional wines for decades. Currently producing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and the Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon.

The owners Betty O’Shaughnessy and Paul Woolls have held the highest standard of quality and customer service for years. This was set as the standard hallmark of their entire staff, including Sean Capiaux the winemaker and Alan Pierson, vineyard manager. Initially we all met while being a wine club member for many years.

Unwrapped the bottle as it was time to indulge in a treat. This is beyond your classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon! One of the best wines tasted in a while. First on the eyes, an inky purple and dark wine in the glass having a heavy viscosity that oozes richness. On the nose a bouquet of violets, cloves and blackberries greet the imbiber. On the palate the descriptors are numerous with espresso, plum, dark chocolate, soft leather, earthiness and raspberries. A wide-reaching broad flavor profile. Secondary flavors of black cherries and a hint of soft vanilla pipe tobacco enliven the sipping experience. On the finish finely sculptured tannins, velvety and yet present, along with dark chocolate complete the experience.

While waiting some 12 years in the bottle, the reward was breathtaking and worth the wait. This wine made my annual Best Wines Tasted for 2025 with an exclamation! Note the excellent condition of the cork.

Prepared one of our favorite dishes last evening, Mediterranean beef kebabs. The recipe called for sirloin beef, but substituted filet mignon. Cut the filet mignon meat and were marinated for almost two hours in the refrigerator. The ingredients for the marinade include fresh lemon juice, marjoram, oregano, parsley, paprika, black pepper, Himalayan Sea salt, olive oil and fresh minced garlic.

Pieces of the filet mignon and vegetables were cut up to fit in the kabab grilling baskets preferred for grilling to capture all the ingredients rather than skewers. Besides the beef, two different colored bell peppers slices (yellow and orange ), and purple onion slices were loaded into the baskets. Placed on the BBQ between medium to medium-high for about 10-12 minutes rotating the baskets 90 degrees every 3 minutes. Emptied from the basket and served.

The meal was accompanied by roasted quarter potatoes in oil, garlic salt and pepper. Additionally, a fresh garden salad and old fashion Italian dressing was served made the salad delicious. The salad was comprised of Iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, green onions and along with sliced black olives and sliced candied almonds.

This meal was extremely tasty, spicy and provided a real Mediterranean experience. It was like Spain, France, Italy and Greece combined to throw a party! Combined with the exquisite wine, one of the best food and wine pairing enjoyed last evening.

Their statement from e.e. cummings is a classic for this winery.  Their other tag line is “in dogged pursuit of perfect wines”. Lindsay Hoopes is the second-generation owner of the vineyard. Her father Spencer founded the vineyard and worked at the small twelve-acre parcel in Oakville producing award winning wines for many years. Lindsay returned in 2012 needing to help with an illness in the family. Taking full charge, she made some unique changes including hooking up with famed vintners Anne Vawter and Jennifer Rue to produce new and bold Cabernets.  Lindsay took up the challenge to develop bio-diverse farming practice initiatives for sustainability certification.  Lindsay undertook the adventure to find new and unique vineyards throughout Napa Valley to augment their estate offering. She also founded a rescue sanctuary for animals. The quote in the title is one of Lindsay’s favorites. This wine was produced by Anne Vawter who learned her craft under Heidi Peterson Barrett at Paradigm. In 2020 the noted and heralded winemaker Aaron Pott joined Hoopes as the winemaker with his impressive and extensive resume from Napa Valley and beyond.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of the winery was where I did my first tasting in 2019, which was their home. Sipping and discussing various wines at the dining room table while looking out into the vineyard adds a “real touch” of genuineness to the experience without pretense.

Today they produce Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc (Atlas Peak), Chardonnay (Carneros), Syrah (Oak Knoll), Merlot (Howell Mountain) and various levels of distinct Cabernet Sauvignon’s (from $125 to $225/bottle).
