2023 Cellar 13 Winery Albariño with Blackened Swordfish

Posted on Updated on

Background

Albariño or Alvarinho is a variety of white wine grape grown in Galicia (northwest Spain) and in Northwest Portugal (Monção and Melgaço). Albariño is the name for the grape in Galician. In Portugal it is known as Alvarinho, and sometimes as Cainho Branco. Around 93% of the world’s Albariño vines are planted in Spain and Portugal. In California for the 2024 harvest 9,784 tons were processed of Albariño grapes. That represents only .007% of the total white wine grapes for California! Approximately 81% of Albariño grapes come from San Joaquin County (AVA #11) and Yolo County (AVA #17), both AVA’s include portions of Sacramento County per the USDA Grape Crush Report for 2024.

Typical flavors of Albariño are lemon zest, grapefruit, honeydew, nectarines and salt and often finish with a slight bitter note or minerality note.  I have noticed that American Albariño is crisp and with strong aromatic notes of stone fruits and honeysuckle.

On the eyes Cellar 13 had a pale-yellow tinge. On the nose a strong aroma of honeysuckle flooded the olfactory senses. On the palate, stone fruit, honeydew melon with lemon zest completed the tasting experience. On the finish both minerality and a salinity note completed the tasting. A great wine for seafood and shellfish. The 2021 Albariño was a Gold Medal Winner at the 2023 Orange County Fair Commercial Competition. The grapes are from Livermore which only contributes less than .0035% of the total California production of Albariño grapes.

This wine made my annual Best Wines Tasted for 2025 and will again for 2026, which comes out each December.

The current release is 2023 and goes for $29/bottle and is 13% in alcohol.

Selected this wine this evening for blackened Swordfish picked up earlier in the day. Usually, I go with Sauvignon Blanc but have enjoyed this wine with other seafood and decided to give it a go. The fish was prepared in a dry rub that called for dried coriander, cumin, garlic powder, smoked paprika and Kosher salt with pepper to taste. It was a solid choice with its acidity and citrus notes with the fish. Served with mandarin oranges and pineapple salsa and topped with both charred and white sesame seeds.  The fruit salsa contrasting with the spicy and flavorful fish was perfect. Accompanied by a fresh homemade macaroni salad.

Cellar 13 was founded by Darin Winton, who also happens to be one of the few Native American Winemakers in the United States. He proudly uses the Cherokee language for their two Bordeaux style blends. The Right Bank blend is named “Aliheliga” which means grateful, and the Left Bank blend is named “Tsogadu” the number 13. On the backside of these two labels is artwork from Cherokee artist John Balloue.

Darin retired in 2017 and was immediately hired as the Assistant Winemaker at 3 Steves Winery in Livermore, California. Here he learned about wine making from start to finish. He was able to produce his own wines under his label. He has used a few wineries in Livermore as an impromptu “custom crush operation”. Darin handles the winemaking, and Gail Henderson runs the operations and marketing side of the winery.

The goal of Cellar 13 is to establish high quality and award-winning wines using fruit from only the best Vineyards. To that point here is just a partial list of their most current award-winning wines in just a few short years:

Selected this wine this evening for tuna sashimi picked up earlier in the day. Usually I go with Sauvignon Blanc but have enjoyed this wine with other seafood and decided to give it a go. It was a solid choice with its acidity and citrus notes with the Maguro. This gives me one additional wine to pair with my weekly sashimi meal.

Why Did the Crowds Show Up to Buck & Rider August 2nd, 2025?

Posted on Updated on

The first reason is that they were named recipient of the Yelps top 20 oyster restaurants in America and Canada. What makes Buck & Rider unique is they fly in daily fresh seafood.  While Phoenix area being in a non-coastal area is not a state that comes to mind for fresh seafood, they were one of three “land locked” states to win this recognition. They came in at number 16. Originally from Arcadia, California they expanded into Gilbert and Scottsdale in 2015.

I had visited Buck & Rider once before in July of 2024 and was so impressed with the quality of seafood I wrote up a quick review of the restaurant. I sought out to understand a little of the how and why their seafood was so fresh and delicious. I met the General Manager Jessica Rotner who informed me of the daily seafood being flown in. She and her staff were so friendly, I told her I would seek out the Gilbert location when I returned.

Fast forward to August 2025, while visiting family in the Mesa/Gilbert area my daughter forwarded me a write up on Buck & Rider being one of the 20 restaurants. In addition, the day after we arrived, all of their locations were holding their 9th annual Oyster Day on Saturday, August 2nd, featuring $2 oysters all day at all locations. The event also included live music and happy hour cocktails specifically at the Gilbert location at 3150 E. Ray Road.

With this event, gather up those enjoying oysters to join in the Oyster Day celebration! So my sister, my grandson and I headed over to get a table at 11 am when they opened. Upon arriving 10 minutes before opening, we were standing in a line extending to the parking lot! Any future trips I will definitely make reservations. You know it is good when this many folks line up in triple digit temperatures!

Their oyster selection today featured six selected specimens:

Rochambeau from Virginia, Sweet and Brine

Breakwater from Rhode Island, Weet and medium Brine

Standish Shore from Massachusetts, Crisp and Briny

Olde Salt from Virginia, Crisp and Briny

Summerstone from Washington, Sweet and Briny

Beach Plum from Massachusetts, Sweet and Briny

Here in the picture, starting at the two lemon slices and going clockwise, are the oysters order above. Also condiments of red tarter sauce, horseradish, mignonette and one other were provided.

FYI, the pictures all have a “yellow tint” from the very welcome sunshades helping to cool down the temperature along with an assortment of fans and large misters!

After all were consumed, we each ordered some additional offerings. Normally with fresh seafood, especially oysters, I would order a glass of Albariño, Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc or other white wine varietals. Since it was still early, my sister and I ordered what I can describe as a Bloody Mary on steroids! So many exotic spices were added it was almost chewable. FYI, my Grandson had a diet coke.

My grandson opted for the Nigiri of all Big Eye Tuna:

My sister enjoyed the lightly breaded Calamari:

Next year will actually “purpose” to be here for this event and be prepared to eat inside. The inside folks waiting at the bar and foyer had to number close to one hundred. The entire facility was jam packed.

I ordered sashimi featuring two pieces of salmon, two pieces of Big Eye Tuna and two pieces of Hamachi. Unfortunately, it was eaten so quickly, I didn’t capture a picture of this excellent presentation.

Here is a quick video of the patio with the tables being packed!

A wonderful event, delicious foods and great service everything needed to make this a memorable experience.
